VOLLEYBALL INVASION!

The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation (CIVF) is currently in the process of finalizing details for the hosting of their annual international volleyball club tournament Spikefest, scheduled for the weekend of November 7th, through 9th, 2003, at the Community College Gym behind the Truman Bodden Sports Complex. Spikefest originated in November 1993, the brainchild of former CIVF President, Kennedy McGowan, and through the years has hosted elite international teams from Cuba, the USA, Bahamas, Barbados and Jamaica. Fraught with tensions, high-end drama, old rivalries, power packed spiking, blocking and strategic play, the nature and scope of this high-level international competition is ideal to introduce Cayman to another level of volleyball, crunched into one dynamic weekend.

With cash prizes totaling US$3,000.00 for the victorious male and female volleyball clubs, teams from the Caribbean and USA are clamoring out of the woodwork for a piece of the pie. This includes 9 teams from Jamaica, inclusive of the female defending champions UWI, wanting to reclaim their place on the victory podium. Waiting to greet them with the local welcome wagon, is local team Upsetters, lead by the members of the Berry Tribe of Rose Wright and Eleanor Berry. In the male division, the island will witness the return of last year's champions from the Bahamas, Technicians, led by their Coach, Peter Parker. Vying to knock them from their victory spot is Jamaican steamrollers, Venus All-Stars, returning to the island with blood in their eyes, due to their defeat on their home turf of Jamaica, in March of 2003, at the hands of Cayman's own Kay-otics.
